Basic Sailing

Course Fee: $300 (Register early for Summer Classes!)

 

Learn to sail on Meadow Lake in a 14 foot sailboat: 2-3 students with an experienced instructor.

Attend TASCA’s lectures on sail theory at Meadow Lake Boathouse in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park

Learn how to tie knots, rig a boat, understand sailing terms, and safely use the wind to sail a boat.

Applicants must be 16 years of age or older and pass a swim test in an indoor pool (stay afloat or tread water 5 minutes, swim 25 yards and don a life preserver while in the water).

  • 6-Week Regular  –One three hour class a week for six weeks 
    Choice of days – Saturday, Monday, Tuesday or Thursday classes 
    Starting in April (Spring Sessions) or July  (Summer Sessions) 
  •  Fall Intensive – One full-day class a week for three weeks    
    Choose either Saturday or Sunday classes starting in September

Our Basic Sailing course is intended to bring the complete novice up to the level of a competent sailor.

  • Rigging the boat (Putting the sails up!)
  • Steering the boat
  • Points of Sail (Upwind, Downwind)
  • Rules of the road
  • Approaching the Dock or Mooring
  • Overboard recovery
  • Safety/Weather & Wind Conditions
